  • 130 years of history

Beginnings of the Opoczno ceramics works date back to 1883, when Jan Dziewulski, as well as brothers Józef and Władysław Lange opened the first factory that was located at Staromiejska street in Opoczno. Initially, the plant was producing red bricks and other ceramic products, with its product range being later expanded by stoneware floor tiles.

The tiles made in Opoczno were valued very highly by the market from the very beginning of production - a fact that is confirmed by numerous awards, such as: 1897 - Gold Medal at the Kiev Exhibition, 1900 - Great Silver Medal at the World Expo in Paris, 1903 - Gold Medal in Brussels, 1909 - Gold Medal in Yekaterynoslav.

The company’s dynamic growth was put on hold by the outbreak of World War I. Production was re-launched as late as in 1924. Thanks to new investment and reconstruction of the factory, as well as to the launch of a new plant, the production volumes were growing steadily. The period of prosperity was interrupted by the deteriorating market situation. The Opoczno factory experienced numerous ups and downs until the beginning of World War II.

  • But despite that, production was not stopped during the war. Under German occupation, the plant was turning out mainly fire proof products, tiles, acid proof clinker and small amounts of stoneware tiles.
On 27 October 1945 the nationalization process began. The ”Dziewulski and Lange” Ceramic Works Joint Stock Company was subordinated to the Provisional National Management Board and was granted a new name of Fabryka Wyrobów Terakotowych Opoczno.
On 14 March 1950 the nationalization process was completed and the company became an independent enterprise now operating under the name of Opoczyńskie Zakłady Płytek Kamionkowych w Opocznie.

The company thrived in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, continuing to invest in new technologies and modernizing its facilities. Plant No. 3 was launched in 1958 (currently known as “Śląsk”). In the 1960s the actual production volume was higher than the nominal output. The 1970s saw  the introduction of modifications to tile glazing and baking technologies.

  • In the 1980s the OPOCZNO plant introduced a number of energy-saving technologies and machines enabling the company to offer modern products. Construction of plant No. 4 (currently known as “Pomorze”) was completed, and the introduction of new methods resulted in a considerable reduction of labor and energy intensiveness of the production processes.
A series of new investment projects were implemented at the beginning of the 1990s. In 1998 ZZPC OPOCZNO received the Golden Statue of the Polish Business Leader, awarded by the Business Centre Club.
At the end of the 1990s the time of change arrived. In October 1998 the Opoczno plant was commercialized and transformed into a single person State Owned Enterprise.

The year 2000, when the company was privatized, proved to be a real breakthrough point in the factory’s history. Poland’s most modern production plant No. 6 - “Mazowsze” was commissioned the same year too. The opening ceremony was attended by the then-president of Poland Aleksander Kwaśniewski.

  • The privatization process was finally completed in 2004, when 99% of the stocks were acquired by a majority shareholder - Credit Suisse First Boston Ceramic Partners S.á.r.l.
On 19 January 2005 the Supervisory Board approved the plan aiming to list the OPOCZNO SA stocks on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The stock debut took place on 24 June 2005, and the first quotes of OPOCZNO S.A. stocks were presented at 10 am that day.
The period of 2005–2006 was marked by foreign expansion of OPOCZNO SA. In 2005 the company acquired a majority shareholding in the Lithuanian company of JSC “Dvarcioniu Keramika”. In 2006, in turn, two limited liability companies were registered - the Kiev-based “Opoczno Ukraina” and, the Moscow-based “Opoczno (Rus).
At the beginning of 2007 48.42% of OPOCZNO SA stocks were acquired by the Cersanit Capital Group (currently Rovese), which has resulted in a merger of both companies.

The OPOCZNO brand, boasting 130 years of tradition, thrives and continues to provide its customers with new interior design inspirations.
